To end our little section on street names in Brussels we finish with another not well known Adolphe. As with Mr. Demeur, the only information I can find about this Adolph is written in Dutch and extremely limited. If any reader has the interest, and will power to write to whoever is in charge of naming streets in Brussels, please ask them for more information about Adolphe Lacomblé.

Another day in Brussels another Adolph to be found. Today I applied for a Belarussian visa, I got lost, so I looked at the map to figure out where I was, and I noticed that I had walked past a street named Adolphe. I was too tired and lost to turn around to go to the street but intrigued to learn more, about why this street was named Adolphe Demeur.
The only information I found about this man is written in Dutch and is from a Wikipedia article. Further his biography concerns specifics about Belgian politics, so if any reader can make sense of this for me please leave a comment. Adolph Dill Jr. Sep. 1, 1840 - August 8, 1921. Like his father, Adolph Jr, was a great businessman, although he shared a name with his father, he did not follow him into the age old baking business. Adolph was one of 5 children, he and his elder brother Joseph went into the tobacco industry, selling pipe tobacco. Only a few years after starting the company Joseph died, which left the company for his younger brother Adolph. Of all the siblings, Adolph Dill Junior lived the longest and witnesses the rise of a new tobacco industry during World War one. The company "Dill pipe tobacco company" in RIchmond area, was world renowned and still lives on many years after its founders. The company began selling tobacco and pipes, but today survives in a very different pipe related service. |
AuthorMy name is Adolph, and you can imagine how many strange situations I have been in because of it. Often people are shocked, offended or confused when I introduce myself. Some show concern and suggest that I use my second name or use a nickname to avoid this awkwardness. This experience motivated me to start this Blog project to inform the world about all the other Adolphs, depreciated and forgotten who, nethertheless, changed this world to a better place. Archives
