Like his father, Adolph Jr, was a great businessman, although he shared a name with his father, he did not follow him into the age old baking business. Adolph was one of 5 children, he and his elder brother Joseph went into the tobacco industry, selling pipe tobacco. Only a few years after starting the company Joseph died, which left the company for his younger brother Adolph. Of all the siblings, Adolph Dill Junior lived the longest and witnesses the rise of a new tobacco industry during World War one. The company "Dill pipe tobacco company" in RIchmond area, was world renowned and still lives on many years after its founders. The company began selling tobacco and pipes, but today survives in a very different pipe related service.
While Dill's did not become a famous brand like Lucky Strike, they continued to produce tobacco. Admittingly it is because of companies like Lucky Strike that Dill suffered, not because of the competition, but rather due to the Cigarette. Dill's were experts in pipe tobacco for, what was then a big market. Over time, Americans moved to cigars and cigarette smoking, this meant the business model had to take a few turns to survive. Dills started producing cigarettes under the names Sano, Tweed, and Model, which for a few seasons brought in profits.
The glitz and glamour of the film industry supported the company, but eventually tobacco production ceased, but not the company. The firm shifted its focus to making pipe cleaners, for which it is somewhat famous today. Albeit they possibly make more sales from children who buy them for crafts rather than from pipe smokers.
In memory and honour of Adolph Dill Jr., who lived to the wise age of 80, I suggest we clean our pipes with Dill pipe cleaners.
