Chemist established the structure of nicotine
German (Prussian)
August 31, 1842–May 21, 1909
To the point that Finland is trying to get rid of it altogether by 2030. https://savutonsuomi.fi/en/ One would think Nicotine is all about tobacco but, it is found in some unexpected places in the Solanaceae family which includes such delicious foods as potatoes, tomatoes , and eggplant. The banning of tobacco in Finland started way back in the ’70s by banning adverts for tobacco, which set off a chain reaction and globally, many countries banned tobacco advertising… Except for Germany where Adolf Pinner identified the structure of Nicotine. Identifying the chemical of the structure of an element makes it possible to synthesis it which makes it possible to create something like Nicorette gum and understand exactly how much nicotine is there in Camel cigarettes, Moods cigars or old faithful Rum and Maple pipe tobacco. Even with such a ban, there are nearly 1Billion smokers worldwide that means one in seven people smoke.
Adolf Pinner not to be confused with the town of Pinner in England, nor with all the lovely definitions given over at the urban dictionary, although Adolf’s work is not too far off from marijuana in that he worked with tobacco.
Adolf Pinner was the son of the Rabbi Lewin Aron Pinner who believed in the importance of education and sent Adolf to school at age four. His chosen profession was chemistry, and he was in his element in the chemistry faculty where he studied in Breslau and later in Berlin. He quickly moved up the ranks from privat-docent to assistant professor and later held the professor's chair of chemistry at the veterinary faculty in Berlin. For his work, he was awarded the title “Geheimer Regierungsrat” which was the highest title for officials in German-speaking space until the end of WWI.
Adolf wrote multiple books about chemistry including a well-known textbook that has been translated into English, Russian and Japanese. He is known for the Pinner reaction also known as Pinner salts and for identifying the chemical structure of nicotine.
Nonetheless, what chemists do influences us daily, from the shampoo we use to the insecticides in our gardens. If you studied chemistry in high school, you probably got to experiment with a few fun chemical reactions yourself. But, identifying the structure of nicotine makes it possible to understand it better, how it acts on the body and in conjunction with other chemicals. This information can be used for evil, such as the fact that for a few years between 1998 and 2005 some American cigarettes were increasing their nicotine content.
Please, can a chemist explain the Pinner reaction and what is a Pinner salt? As I understand it. A reaction occurs when two substances are mixed and a new product is born the product is called a Pinner salt. How that works, I do not understand, and I do not have the time or the energy to go get a degree in chemistry. All I want to know is if I can sprinkle some Pinner salt on Pomme Anna or is that a bad idea?
There are a few Adolphs who are important to the tobacco industry or at least are related to tobacco in some way, including, Adolf Mayer, who identified the Tobacco Mosaic disease which leads us to understand what disease is. One of the members of Vauen pipes Adolf Eckert gave the company their distinctive name, and Adolf Luderitz who essentially Bought/stole Namibia. While people mostly have strong negative thoughts about tobacco, Dr Neil Grunberg believes it is one of the most interesting drugs in the world (check out the link on his name for a great podcast). Many countries make a great profit from tobacco plantations and even use tobacco as a currency and of course the well known American peace pipe signifying the strong religious use of tobacco. Have a look at more tobacco research at the tobacco research board. http://www.kutsaga.co.zw/about%20us.html And my work on tobacco here, YouTube, conference abstracts.
Adolf Pinner contributed greatly to the world and lies in the Weißensee cemetery which is the second-largest Jewish cemetery in Europe. The cemetery is huge covering 42 ha and has over 100,000 graves.
If any of that tempts you to start smoking a pipe here is an affiliate link to a pipe starter kit from Vauen or their Lord of the Rings pipes one of the most well-known pipe companies in Germany named by Adolf Eckert.
