In search of Adolphs, I find myself hoping that there is an Adolph behind all the great things of the world. I hoped to find an Adolph behind famous companies such as Coca-cola, if not Google. In some cases, there are Adolphs behind great big names like Paramount Pictures, Adidas, the New York Times, but what about Google?

To end our little session on Adolph astronomers, we will look at a more recent Adolf, from the University of Toledo. Adolf Wit Professor of Astrophysics, got his Ph.D., 1967, from the University of Chicago. To be honest there is not much biographical information about Mr. Witt. However, he should not be confused with another Adolf Witt, a professional boxer. Dr. Adolf Witt's research essentially looks at dust, but not the kind you find at home, rather interstellar dust. Dust has never been more important in the case of this research, it is because of interstellar dust that light reflects off the dust flying around, giving us a better view of the planets and stars of our universe. Adolf's research makes observations of this dust both from satellite images as well as viewings from telescopes. The dust is measured in many ways, such as what direction it is moving, how large the grains are, how much light they reflect, and what type of light they reflect. Further Adolf and his research group are attempting to analyse what this dust is made of and if at all possible from where it comes. The study also maps out the movement of radiation through these dust particles. Adolf Witt's work explains why Adolf Schaller can draw such incredible pictures. It is because of the dust floating in dense air, reflecting light and revealing the galaxy to us. Such research sheds light on the chemical compositions of the dust we have here on earth and deepens our knowledge of silicon particles used in making special gels. The light refracting through dust also gives us a new view of the movement of light. Sources:

Kinau was born into a family of Protestant preachers and teachers. After attending Gymnasium in Halberstadt (nearly 500 Km from his hometown) from 1828 to 1833, he moved another 100km East to Halle to study theology. He also studied theology at the University of Magdeburg. His theological studies lasted from 1833 to 1840. Adolf Frederick Lindemann was born on the 13th of May 1846 in Langenberg. He was a German-British engineer, and an entrepreneur of water works and enters this part of the series as an amateur astronomer.
Lindemann studied engineering in Nuremberg, he also worked as a luthier and built scientific instruments. In 1871, he immigrated to the United Kingdom, where he became the head the first transatlantic telegraph, which was a cable that spanned from Ireland to the United States of America. From the 12-13 of August is The Perseid meteor shower, unfortunately for me the bright city lights of Minsk hid it from view. I am sure you have seen those beautiful photos of meteors and planets etc. and thought to yourself why do they look so beautiful but when we look through a telescope we don't see anything as spectacular? Well, there is a little bit of photo tampering involved, much like in anatomical drawings, it is the work of astronomical artists that paint these beautiful heavenly objects. |
AuthorMy name is Adolph, and you can imagine how many strange situations I have been in because of it. Often people are shocked, offended or confused when I introduce myself. Some show concern and suggest that I use my second name or use a nickname to avoid this awkwardness. This experience motivated me to start this Blog project to inform the world about all the other Adolphs, depreciated and forgotten who, nethertheless, changed this world to a better place. Archives
